Position:
Custodian for the 2025/2026 School year Qualifications
  • Must be physically capable and willing to perform required tasks in custodial and general maintenance.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds to head level, when required.
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend and walk without limitations.
  • Must possess an acceptable attitude towards staff, students and parents.
  • Must demonstrate dedication to job performance and accept direction and guidance from supervisory personnel.
  • Must be consistent in monitoring work schedules and in performance of tasks.
  • Must have a current New Mexico Driver’s License.
  • Must be literate.
  • Must be able to communicate well.
  • Must know math computation skills.
  • General training and experience in construction, plumbing, and electrical work.

    Job Goal

    To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place conducive to learning as well as assist in maintaining District Buildings/Grounds.

    Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist in keeping buildings and premises, including sidewalks, drive ways and play areas neat and clean as needed.
  • Assist in implementing a high-frequency operation plan provided by the immediate supervisor as needed.
  • Regulate heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperature appropriate to the season and ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, parking areas and steps during inclement weather.
  • Monitor to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during building occupancy hours.
  • Assist with sweeping and mopping classrooms and dusting furniture.
  • Assist in cleaning corridors when conditions require it before and after school.
  • Assist with cleaning all windows on both the inside and outside.
  • Keep the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Perform yard‑keeping chores such as grass cutting, tree trimming and the like, as needed to maintain school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Keep all floors clean, attractive and in good state of preservation.
  • Address building repairs as needed.
  • Report major repairs needed promptly to the maintenance supervisor.
  • Maintain a regular schedule for servicing motors and other mechanical equipment.
  • Report immediately to the immediate supervisor any damage to school property.
  • Remain on school premises during school hours and during non‑school hours when building use is authorized and attendance is required by supervisor.
  • Assume responsibility for opening and closing buildings as needed and for ensuring all doors and windows are secured and lights—except those left on for safety—are turned off.
  • Pick up ample cleaning supplies and/or materials.
  • Implement an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and daily disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  • Conduct daily inspection and testing of all electrical installations, water wells, water connections, pilot lights on heaters, to ensure their working and safe condition.
  • Comply with OSHA and Maintenance Preventive Policies as adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Attend board meetings as requested by the Maintenance Supervisor or Superintendent.
  • Respond to properly initiated work orders on a priority basis and maintain district‑wide physical plant(s).
  • Examine school buildings regularly for needed repairs and maintenance, inclusive of mechanical repairs or replacements.
  • Order materials as needed, and make recommendations for supplies and equipment for purchase.
  • Comply with EPA Regulations regarding water meter reading and water treatment, and maintain water quality for the school district.
  • Address all PSFA requirements in relation to School‑Dude.
  • Perform other assigned tasks required by the Maintenance Supervisor or Superintendent.
