Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED required. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record required. Minimum of one (1) year of janitorial or building maintenance experience. Must pass a thorough background investigation and drug screening. Must have a cell phone and be able to report to work within thirty (30) minutes to respond to emergency or on‑call situations.
Position SummaryUnder general supervision, this role involves performing routine maintenance and custodial duties to keep city buildings, facilities, and grounds in a clean and orderly condition. Duties range from general building maintenance and minor repairs to landscaping and assisting with the maintenance and construction of streets, drainage, and alley systems. The employee is also responsible for ensuring public spaces are safe and well‑maintained while abiding by the legal direction of the City Manager.
EssentialDuties & Functions
- Cleans buildings and restrooms, which includes sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, stripping, sealing, finishing, and polishing floors, as well as steam‑cleaning or shampooing carpets.
- Cleans windows, mirrors, and glass partitions, and gathers and empties trash.
- Uses cleaning chemicals and equipment safely, mixing water and detergents or acids according to specifications.
- Monitors building security and safety, such as locking doors after hours and checking electrical appliances to prevent hazards.
- Assists with landscaping, including mowing, weed removal, and grass cutting around municipal buildings and parks.
- Removes snow, debris, and trash from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, utilizing snowplows, snow blowers, snow shovels, and snow‑melting chemicals.
- Sprays insecticides and fumigants for pest control.
- Sets up, arranges, and breaks down tables, chairs, decorations, and scaffolding for events and banquets.
- Makes minor adjustments and repairs to HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, and notifies managers of major repair needs.
- Requisition s cleaning and maintenance supplies.
- Drives city vehicles required for work, including vans and industrial trucks.
- Moves heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, and dusts or polishes furniture and fixtures.
- Assists Maintenance Worker II and III as needed.
- Ability to effectively use a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Possesses basic math and communication skills (both oral and written).
- Capable of maintaining work logs and records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to review and identify projects that need to be serviced by outside contractors.
Work is performed in an office environment as well as outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Involves light to medium physical demand. Must be willing to work irregular hours and outdoors in inclement weather.
