Senior Stationary Engineer

Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:

Under direction, is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all utilities in large public buildings and of a steam power plants, chillers, and fire protection systems; performs related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Responsible for the operation, maintenance, testing, and repair of plant equipment such as boilers, furnaces, pumps, fans, engines, turbines, generators, electrical equipment, heating and ventilating equipment, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic and direct digital control systems (DDCS) and plumbing equipment.
2. Performs testing and inspections of life safety building systems and maintains records for review by oversight agencies, including The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, NYS Department of Health, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY).
3. May operate or supervise the operation of control consoles in control rooms.
4. Supervises assigned personnel.
5. Prepares work schedules and directs the assignment of personnel.
6. Directs and evaluates studies of operating procedures.
7. May assist in the development and implementation of energy saving methods and best practices for all utility systems.
8. Determines and directs work procedures.
9. Sets up and keeps records to indicate plant performance; keeps records and writes reports.
10. May operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
11. Plans, allocates and maintains inventory and supplies for preventative and emergency maintenance needs.
12. May prepare equipment and material requisitions, including specifications and vendor bids required for operation, maintenance and repair.
13. May prepare scope of work for vendor contracts.

Minimum Qualifications
1. One (1) year of full-time experience as a Stationary Engineer in charge of a high-pressure plant supervising a subordinate staff in the operation, maintenance and adjustment of high pressure boilers; and
2. A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings; and
3. A Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01) issued by the New York City Fire Department.

For appointment to certain positions, candidates will be required, within 90 days from the day of appointment, to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness (COF) for:
Citywide Standpipe System (S-13);
Standpipe for Multi-zone System (S-14);
Citywide Sprinkler System (S-12);
Operate and Maintain Air Compressor (A-35);
Supervision of Piped Nonflammable Medical Gases (G-71);
Supervision of Medical Gases Bulk O2/NO2 (G-17);
Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems and Other Related Systems (S-95);
Torch Use of Flammable Gasses (G-60) and/or any other site specific required certification issued by the New York City Fire Department.
