Position: Maintenance Porter

The Police Athletic League (PAL) of New York City is an independent youth development nonprofit organization that operates diverse programs across all five boroughs. PAL offers programs for children from ages 2 to young adults, including Head Start, after-school programs, summer day camps, teen centers, college readiness programs, youth employment, and juvenile justice programs. The Maintenance Porter is a critical role responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in the facility and performing maintenance tasks. This role reports to the Center Director, supports other PAL sites, and provides cleaning and maintenance support for staff across sites. The role requires attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.

• Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of assigned areas, including restrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas, and ensure supplies are restocked.
• Dust, sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; clean windows and surfaces as needed.
• Empty trash bins and dispose of waste materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
• Ensure supplies, such as paper towels, soap, and cleaning materials, are ordered and stocked using PAL’s purchase order system.
• Maintain and clean custodial equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working order.

• Update and resolve tickets as assigned within PAL’s facility maintenance tracking system.
• Assist with maintenance duties as required, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, fixing minor plumbing issues, painting and maintaining equipment, changing light ballasts, etc.
• Report any maintenance needs or safety hazards to the supervisor promptly and enter maintenance tickets in PAL’s ticketing system for new issues.
• Escort vendors for repairs and maintenance/inspection visits; assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues and communicate issues back to supervisors.
• Porter/transport supplies and conduct maintenance activities across sites as needed for events or other coverage.

• Follow standards of DOH, DOB, FDNY, HPD and ECB Departments.
• Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
• Ensure cleaning, facility maintenance and equipment are operated up to date using School Aged Child Care (SACC) Licensed standards. Use cleaning supplies and equipment safely and efficiently, as per SACC licenses.
• Perform daily opening and closing walkthroughs ensuring spaces are secured and report any issues.
• Use cleaning chemicals and equipment according to safety standards.
• Work closely with other operations team members, custodial and maintenance staff to support overall facility operations.
• Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.

Who you are/

What you bring:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience in custodial or maintenance roles is a plus but not required.
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
• Basic knowledge of cleaning and maintenance procedures.
• Knowledge in using cleaning chemicals and cleaning equipment according to safety standards.
• Physical stamina – ability to lift and carry heavy objects (at least 50 pounds), climb ladders, stairs, stand for extended periods, and perform other physical tasks.
• Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Highly professional and team-oriented with a passion for excellence and eagerness to help the department meet goals.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and complete assignments under strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Ability to travel across NYC locations;
