* Current employees in any of the eligible titles listed below in the “Eligibility and Qualification Requirements” section must be employed in the eligible title for at least 1 year in order to be promoted.
- Internal Candidates for MTA Bus:
- 1. is employed in the title of Maintainer’s Helper; and is not otherwise ineligible; or
- 2. is employed in the title of Cleaner/Maintainer’s Helper and meets one of the following education and/or experience qualification requirements by the last day of the application period; and is not otherwise ineligible.
- A. Two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a mechanic’s helper, apprentice or trainee performing or assisting in the performance of automotive or aircraft maintenance and repair; or
- B. Graduation from a recognized trade school or technical school, approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency, with a major course of study in automotive mechanics or a closely related field, totaling 600 hours; or
- C. Graduation from a vocational high school, approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency, with a major course of study in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field; or
- D. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an AAS degree or higher in automotive mechanics or a closely related field.
- Internal Candidates for MaBSTOA:
- 1. is employed in the title of Maintainer’s Helper, Cleaner/Maintainer’s Helper or Stock Worker; and
- 2. is not otherwise ineligible.
When you apply, you must meet the following requirements:
- 1. Three years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a journey‑level mechanic (i.e., a fully trained, knowledgeable, experienced, proficient, and competent mechanic) repairing passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, or aircrafts; or
- 2. Two years of full‑time satisfactory experience at the journey‑level as described in paragraph “1” above, plus the completion of one of the following listed below before obtaining your journey‑level experience:
- A. Two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a mechanic’s helper, apprentice or trainee performing or assisting in the work described above; or
- B. Graduation from a recognized trade school or technical school with a major course of study in automotive mechanics or a closely related field, totaling 600 hours; or
- C. Graduation from a vocational high school with a major course of study in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field; or
- D. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree or higher with a major course of study in automotive mechanics or a closely related field.
MaBSTOA Salary Range: The current minimum salary for Bus Maintainer (Chassis) is $37.16 per hour for a 40‑hour week increasing to $43.72 per hour in the sixth year of service. These rates are subject to change. The benefits of this position include, but are not limited to, night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan and a pension plan.
MTA Bus Company Salary Range: The current minimum salary for Bus Maintainer (Chassis) in the bargaining unit represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1181 and Local 1179 is $27.87 per hour a 40‑hour work week increasing to $39.81 per hour in the fourth year of service. The current minimum salary for Bus Maintainer (Chassis) in the bargaining unit represented by the Transport Workers Union, Local 100 is $30.60 per hour a 40‑hour work week increasing to $43.72 per hour in the fourth year of service.
