Porter, Maintenance​/Cleaning

JOB SCOPE:
The Porter is responsible for the cleanliness and functionality of the f of the facility, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for residents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain cleanliness and safety of common and staff-designated areas.

Conduct yard and exterior maintenance (snow removal, trash pickup, etc.).Clean and maintain sidewalks and outdoor areas

Sweep, mop, vacuum, and scrub floors, dust furniture, clean windows, and mirrors, and disinfect surfaces.

Put garbage on the sidewalk/curb in accordance with the Department of Sanitation (DOS) or garbage disposal company’s pickup schedule.

Perform minor repairs, such as leaky faucets, replacing light bulbs, or addressing small maintenance issues.

Responsible for washing bed linens, towels, and other washable items used in shelter.

Ensure that cleaning supplies are stocked and maintain inventory of necessary items.

Receive deliveries.

Store tools and supplies in designated areas.

Support special projects, event setups at shelter site.

Regularly inspect the building to identify potential hazards or areas needing attention.

Report building damage and vandalism, unusual circumstances, and unsafe conditions to Director of Operations (DO).Represent Bronx Family Network in the community.

Perform other duties as assigned.

WORK RELATIONS AND TEAMWORK:

Fosters cooperative relationships with other staff and maintains professionalism. Adheres to cleaning schedules and tasks allocated by supervisor. Works closely with Operations and maintenance departments.

Supports the health and well-being of residents by ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in all areas.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Ability to work in an emotionally taxing field—a positive attitude and sense of humor are essential.

Ability and willingness to learn building maintenance and custodial services and safety procedures.

Strong verbal communication skills and an inclination to communicate with staff and clients in a consistently professional manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Prior experience in custodial or janitorial or maintenance services is preferred.

Excellent verbal communication skills.

Strong listening skills.

Must be able to follow verbal and written instruction.

Reliability, punctuality, and commitment to safety, hospitality, and professionalism.

Availability for some weekend and evening shifts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This role operates primarily indoors but includes responsibilities for exterior cleaning and seasonal maintenance (i.e., snow removal, trash pickup). Exposure to cleaning chemicals, lifting equipment, and physical exertion are part of daily routine.

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, sort, talk, hear, and see, stoop, bend, squat, bend, kneel, grasp, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift.

Ability to climb stairs while carrying objects up to 25 pounds in weight.

Repetitively use hands to operate equipment.

Flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist.

May be subject to standing for long periods of time.
