Our Story

The West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH) is a community-based organization whose mission is to provide safe, affordable housing with supportive services within a residential setting which enhances the independence and dignity of each person.

WSFSSH develops, manages, and provides housing for low-income older persons, many of whom live with mental illness and/or have experienced homelessness.

The Maintenance Technician will perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and housekeeping tasks to provide a clean and safe environment for residents of West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH) with the goal of enabling senior residents to live safely and as independently as possible.

This is a full-time position, five days a week on-site.

Please note:

This is a Floater position required to visit and work at different sites on the Upper West Side and the Bronx. Both OMH/DOH background checks are required.

• In coordination with building super, or as directed, prepare vacant apartments for occupancy
• Assist with painting and light repairs
• Assist in special projects (for example: stripping and waxing floors)
• Assist with electrical repairs, including troubleshooting and replacing fixtures as necessary
• Complete residential painting projects with precision and attention to detail
• Perform general maintenance and repairs on residential properties, ensuring all work meets safety standards
• Required to wear the company’s uniform and/or adhere to the dress code policy, and to always maintain neat and clean appearance

• Work as a member of a team to establish and maintain a high level of care and respect for and communication with senior residents
• Work cooperatively with other staff members
• Share information about resident progress, needs, and problems with other staff in accordance with WSFSSH Confidentiality Policy
• Attend training sessions and conferences as required for enhancement of job skills
• Implement emergency procedures as necessary
• Submit all required reports in a complete and timely manner
• Assist with other duties as directed

• Strong maintenance skills and experience
• Able to work in a multicultural and diverse environment
• Proven experience with plumbing and electrical systems
• Ability to work with hardware tools and power equipment
• Extremely organized and a good communicator
• Detail-oriented and an aptitude for problem solving
• Bilingual in English and Spanish, highly preferred
• Collaborate with team members to lead projects and ensure timely completion of tasks

• High School Diploma or GED required; in lieu of GED, 4 years in a relevant handyman and/or maintenance position required
• Minimum of 1 year experience working with a senior population and dependent individuals
• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated work experience as a handy person and building maintenance
• Able to perform job responsibilities

• This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing; this role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
