Job Overview
The Facilities and Grounds Worker helps maintain the buildings, grounds, and gardens at CCE of Schenectady County’s Sustainable Living Center, supporting community education, gardening, and sustainable living programs. This hands‑on role includes groundskeeping, cleaning, basic building repairs, equipment maintenance, snow removal, and support for garden upkeep with staff and volunteers. The position monitors facility conditions and addresses maintenance and safety needs in both indoor and outdoor settings during all weather conditions.
Responsibilities& Essential Functions
- Maintain grounds: mowing, trimming, yard waste removal, and pesticide management.
- Clean buildings, restrooms, and classrooms; remove trash and recycle.
- Ensure supplies for cleaning and maintenance are stocked and maintained.
- Maintain outdoor water access, hoses, and greenhouses; inspect and repair damage.
- Perform minor building maintenance and repairs (painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry).
- Maintain and repair grounds and gardening equipment; keep maintenance records.
- Clear snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances before openings.
- Coordinate with staff and volunteers, including youth participants for cleaning duties.
- Provide assistance to City of Schenectady for facility and garden maintenance needs as assigned.
- Manage facilities with guidance from supervisors, maintaining maintenance plans and records.
- Develop and pursue a professional development plan with the supervisor.
- Adhere to health and safety policies, reporting hazards and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Follow all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and association policies.
- High school diploma or GED and at least one year of related experience.
- Knowledge of building cleaning, groundskeeping, maintenance, and basic repairs.
- Ability to operate equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and snow blowers.
- Ability to identify and address facility and safety issues.
- Basic knowledge of building systems (plumbing, mechanical).
- Valid NYS driver’s license and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends.
- Ability to read instructions, write simple reports, and communicate positively with staff, volunteers, and city officials.
- Basic computer skills (email, calendar, internet-based systems).
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks with supervisor guidance.
Workers frequently perform tasks outdoors in all weather conditions, lift or move materials, and use equipment that can be loud. Personal protective equipment such as ear protection, eye protection, and gloves is required where appropriate. The role may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts and use of tools that require safe handling.
Compensation & BenefitsPart‑time (14 hours per week) hourly rate of $19.50. The position is non‑exempt and does not include relocation or visa sponsorship.
