Maintenance Worker

We are excited to invite a passionate and experienced Maintenance Worker to join our team! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for an experienced Maintenance Worker for our Families w/ Children facility in Staten Island, NY. As the Maintenance Worker, you will play a pivotal role in our organization, performing essential repairs, maintenance tasks, and improvements at our facility to maintain a safe environment for our families.

Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure facility systems continue to operate efficiently and the physical condition of the site does not deteriorate.
  • Effectively handle service requests and work orders.
  • Assess issues with electricity, plumbing, HVACs and other equipment to make recommendations so vendors can effectively address and resolve the problem.
  • Perform skilled painting and sheetrock work, including patching and finishing.
  • Identify and report facility deficiencies or needs to the supervisor or vendors.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with unit inspections.
  • Have knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and drywall repairs.
  • Be familiar with the proper use of power tools.
  • Perform limited grounds maintenance such as mowing and trimming lawns, hedges, and cleaning snow from sidewalks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in general maintenance.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and frequently lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Capable of performing duties with limited supervision.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish strongly preferred.
