The NYS HELPS (Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Program Statewide) is a program that allows civil service agencies to hire qualified permanent employees quickly and without requiring a competitive civil service exam. Candidates must still meet all other minimum qualifications for the job.
4 positions are available across the following schools:
- Transit Middle School – Custodian; 40 hours/week (Tue‑Thu 2:30‑11:00 pm, Fri 12:00‑8:30 pm, Sat 6:30‑3:00 pm)
- South High School – Custodian; 40 hours/week (Tue‑Thu 2:30‑11:00 pm, Fri 12:00‑8:30 pm, Sat 6:30‑3:00 pm)
- Heim Middle School – Custodian; 40 hours/week (Tue‑Thu 2:30‑11:00 pm, Fri 12:00‑8:30 pm, Sat 6:30‑3:00 pm)
- North High School – Custodian; 40 hours/week (Tue‑Thu 2:30‑11:00 pm, Fri 12:00‑8:30 pm, Sat 6:30‑3:00 pm)
Distinguishing Features: The work involves responsibility for cleaning, caring, and maintaining a school site or assigned section in a suburban school district, including routine cleaning and semi‑skilled maintenance tasks.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma, vocational school diploma, or HS equivalency plus one (1) year of experience in commercial cleaning or general building maintenance; experience in one of the following trades is also acceptable: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, or plumbing.
- Five (5) years of experience in commercial cleaning or general building maintenance, including experience in one of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, or plumbing.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) or (B).
- Possession of a valid Class 5 New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Valid part‑time or volunteer experience may be pro‑rated toward full‑time experience requirements.
Special Requirements:
- Good knowledge of commercial cleaning practices and procedures.
- Working knowledge of building maintenance and repair practices related to buildings, fixtures, and operating equipment.
- Working knowledge of properties of various cleaning substances.
- Ability to make semi‑skilled plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs.
- Ability to operate plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning systems following established procedures.
- Ability to use various cleaning equipment and products.
- Working knowledge of ground maintenance; ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch for long periods of time.
- Ability to set up and climb ladders or scaffolds.
- Ability to supervise a small staff.
- Ability to cut grass, trim shrubbery, rake leaves, and maintain grounds.
- Thoroughness, dependability, and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Reports to: A Head or Senior Custodian, or an administrative employee of higher rank who assigns, observes, and monitors work on a frequent basis.
Supervises: May exercise supervision over a small number of cleaners and laborers by assigning work, giving instructions, providing assistance, and observing work progress.
Typical Work
Activities:
- Familiar with and contributes to the successful implementation of the District's Mission and Belief statements.
- Performs a variety of cleaning tasks such as mopping floors, washing walls, ceilings, windows, dusting furniture, stripping and finishing floors, vacuuming, and shampooing carpets.
- Performs semi‑skilled maintenance and repair work, including fixing or replacing broken shelving, hardware, glazing windows, repairing window coverings, unplugging toilets, and replacing faucet washers.
- Makes replacements of blown fuses, switches, outlets, ballasts, and light fixtures.
- Maintains grounds by cutting grass, trimming shrubbery, raking leaves, removing snow, and maintaining power equipment.
