Fleet Maintenance Manager
Location: New York
All candidates must be working for a NYC agency and hold the permanent title of Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment). The New York City Department of Correction seeks an experienced SOM (ME) to serve as Deputy Director of Fleet Maintenance and Operations. The Deputy Director will oversee garage operations, pumping stations, and other repair and maintenance functions, including planning, directing, and coordinating repair and maintenance activities.
The employee will report directly to the Director of the Fleet Maintenance and Operations Unit.
- Coordinate the operation, maintenance, servicing, and repairs of all fleet vehicles.
- Ensure an adequate supply of proper parts is maintained in all stockrooms.
- Initiate purchase of parts and equipment.
- Contact vendors to ensure timely completion of repairs.
- Prepare and maintain records and weekly reports for submission to the Fleet Director.
- Manage compliance with city policies and effective fleet management practices.
- Operate motor vehicles as needed.
- Conduct inspections and review work progress.
- Act as liaison with departmental units and external organizations.
- Assist and advise the Director in planning, reviewing, and coordinating cost‑effective vehicle replacement programs and efficient utilization of vehicles.
- Perform other duties as requested or required by the Fleet Director.
The ideal candidate is motivated, familiar with mechanics, works independently and as part of a team, and demonstrates proficiency under pressure. Experience in supervising, managing both capital and expense of all DOC fleet vehicles, preparing budget proposals, and participating in budget deliberations is required.
Qualifications- Seven years of full‑time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile), or Machinist, with at least two years at a supervisory level; or
- At least five years of experience as described above, plus sufficient training obtained from an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or accredited college to make up the remaining required experience (six months of acceptable trade or vocational experience credit per year, one year of college credit per 30 semester credits). All candidates must have the two years of supervisory experience.
At least two years’ experience as a Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment) is preferred.
License Requirements- Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License for mandatory use during employment.
- For certain appointments a Class B Commercial Driver License, unrestricted, may be required and must be maintained continuously.

Residency RequirementNew York City residency is typically required within 90 days of appointment. City employees who have worked for the City for at least two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
