Facilities Management & Construction (FMC) manages, operates, and maintains 56 City-owned buildings throughout the five boroughs, working to provide clean, safe, and energy efficient space for the tenants in these public buildings. FMC is dedicated to both the daily maintenance of the public buildings, managed by Building Services, Fire & Life Safety, and other critical field staff, as well as to long-term renovation and rehabilitation projects, which are managed by a dedicated staff of architects, engineers, and other professional technical experts.

FMC also oversees the daily operations of all elevators across the DCAS public buildings portfolio.

Under supervision, custodians perform work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility, which may entail supervision, in the cleaning, operation and maintenance of one or more small buildings and their immediate grounds and in the enforcement of safety requirements in such assigned areas; or, in a medium sized building, supervises cleaners on an assigned shift. Following are typical tasks performed at Assignment Level I:
Supervises a small number of cleaners, performing such tasks as sweeping, dusting, mopping, polishing, waxing, gathering and disposing of refuse; cleaning and removing snow from walks; maintaining lawns and shrubs; operating a low pressure heating system and cleaning the boiler parts; performs these tasks in buildings where no subordinate staff is assigned. Inspects the building and grounds to note general condition and necessity for repairs;

checks work performance, assures the proper use, cleanliness and storage of tools.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.

To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have three years of satisfactory experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" above.

To be assigned to Assignment Level III and IV candidates must have four years of satisfactory experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
