POSITION DESCRIPTION

Employee is under the direct supervision of the school's Head Custodian and the Maintenance Director in the care and cleaning of Newington Public School buildings. Employee provides school staff with quality customer service by creating a clean, environmentally safe, pleasant, and secure working environment conducive to teaching and learning, as outlined in the department's "Mission Statement" and custodial handbook. Employee will use green cleaning techniques, equipment, and products to meet the "Tools for Schools" IAQ mandates on a daily basis.

ESSENTIAL

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Mops, scrubs, spot buffs vinyl floors and vacuums carpeted areas on a daily basis using state‑of‑the‑art equipment.
  • Remove trash and recycling items from all interior areas of the school building on a daily basis.
  • Cleans, polishes, sanitizes, and deodorizes fixtures in bathrooms and kitchen equipment daily.
  • Cleans and maintains cleaning equipment, returning it to proper location after use.
  • Unlocks and locks doors as needed; secures windows and doors before leaving assigned area.
  • Properly uses Sonitrol assigned access card.
  • Sets up various rooms for administrative, athletic, community, and other program activities.
  • Understands and practices the department's "Safety‑First At All Times" policy while working in school buildings.
  • Moves furniture, boxes, equipment for school staff as needed.
  • Attends all mandated CONN OSHA and state‐mandated training programs.
  • Assists with snow removal and/or school emergency situations.
  • Follows all Board of Education and Maintenance Services policies and procedures.
  • Maintains proper department dress attire, is well groomed, and is respectful to lead custodian, school administrators, teaching staff, students, and parents.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • May perform additional tasks and duties as requested.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Some prior knowledge and experience of custodial cleaning methods, equipment, and products.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and oral instruction.
  • Ability to respond in a professional manner in unforeseen emergency situations.
  • Ability to respond to customer requests in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.
  • Understanding of the department's Quality Service "WIN WIT" and Military Wet Look philosophy.
  • Understanding of new green cleaning methods and equipment care.
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
  • Ability to operate a box truck following all safety procedures.
  • Ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Ability to work independently for periods of time.
REQUIRED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, squat, stretch, kneel, push and pull.
  • Ability to use custodial and snow removal equipment.
  • Ability to climb and work on a ladder for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to check and clear roof drains.
  • Ability to work as part of the snow removal team.
  • Good health and physical condition.
  • Ability to be on call in the event of a school emergency during off hours.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work extra hours as necessary.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Some experience in the cleaning of schools, public or commercial buildings, or an equivalent combination of training or experience.
  • Ability to follow direction and communicate clearly with others.
  • Valid State of Connecticut driver's license.
