Job Title
Employee is under the direct supervision of the schools Head Custodian and the Maintenance Director in the care and cleaning of Newington Public School buildings. Employee provides school staff with quality customer service on a daily basis by providing a clean, environmentally safe, pleasant, and secure working environment conducive to teaching and learning as outlined in the departments "Mission Statement" and custodial handbook.
Employee will use green cleaning techniques, equipment, and products to meet the "Tools for Schools" IAQ mandates on a daily basis.
- Mops, scrubs, spot buffs vinyl floors and vacuums carpeted areas on a daily basis using state of the art equipment.
- Removal of trash and recycling items from all interior areas of the school building on a daily basis.
- Cleans polishes, sanitizes and deodorizes fixtures in bathrooms and kitchen equipment daily.
- Cleans and maintains cleaning equipment returning to proper location after use.
- Unlocks and locks doors as needed, secures windows and doors before leaving assigned area.
- Proper use of Sonitrol assigned access card.
- Set up of various rooms for administrative, athletic, community and other program activities.
- Understands and practices the departments "Safety-First At All Times Policy" while working in our school buildings.
- Moves furniture, boxes, equipment for school staff as needed.
- Attends all mandated CONN OSHA and State mandated training programs.
- Will assist with snow removal and/or school emergency situations.
- Will be required to follow all Board of Education and Maintenance Services policies and procedures.
- Will be required to be in proper department dress attire and well groomed and be respectful to their lead custodian, school administrators, teaching staff, and most importantly students and parents.
May perform additional tasks and duties as requested.
Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Some prior knowledge and experience of custodial cleaning methods, equipment, & products.
- Ability to comprehend and follow written and oral instruction.
- Ability to respond in a professional manner in unforeseen emergency situations.
- Ability to respond to customer requests in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.
- Ability to comprehend the departments Quality Service WIN WIT and Military Wet look philosophy.
- Understanding of new green cleaning methods and equipment care.
- Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
- Ability to operate a box truck following all safety procedures.
- Must have the ability to work overtime when necessary.
- Must be able to work independently for periods of time.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, squat, stretch, kneel, push and pull. Ability to use custodial and snow removal equipment. Climb and work on a ladder for extended periods of time. Ability to check and clear roof drains. Ability to work as part of the snow removal team. Be in good health and physical condition. Ability to be on call in the event of a school emergency during off hours.
Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. Ability to work extra hours as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have some experience in the cleaning of schools, public or commercial buildings, or equivalent combination of training or experience. Must have the ability to follow direction and communicate clearly with others. Holds a valid State of Connecticut driver's license.
