General Definition of Work

Performs routine service and labor duties in support of operating the County's compactor/recycling sites and related work as apparent or assigned. Duties are performed within established guidelines and/or instructions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Environmental Management Director.

Essential Functions

Monitors compactor/recycling sites at all times during regularly scheduled hours and ensures proper operation including placement of all trash and recyclables in designated containers.

Meets and assists all customers and remains outside of the building near the containers while customers are on site, providing reasonable assistance to citizens with deposit of garbage or recyclables as requested.

Removes and properly disposes of any bags left outside the compactor/recycling sites at the beginning of each day.

Maintains clean and neat condition of compactor/recycling sites at all times.

Accepts household garbage only in official County issued bags and all County approved recyclables (bags are not needed for recyclables).

Provides instruction as to disposal options for any non-accepted materials brought to the compactor/recycling sites.

Sort any commingled recyclables, remove any contaminants and deposit approved recyclables in designated containers.

Provide immediate notice to Director of any issues requiring attention (oversized objects, complaints, equipment issues/repairs needed, violations of County Solid Waste and Litter Ordinance, etc.)

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of compactor/recycling practices; ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public; ability to understand oral and written directions; physical ability to lift, bend, stoop, climb and reach; ability to work independently; ability to identify hazards and take safety precautions; ability to establish and maintain records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to fingers, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements;

vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection and observing general surroundings and activities, operating compaction equipment, operating motor vehicles or equipment, working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, airborne particles, fumes or odors;

work is generally in a noisy location (i.e. garbage truck engines).

Special Requirements

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.

Valid driver's license in the State of Georgia with favorable driving history (MVR).

Ability to work a varying schedule including weekends.
