The City of Newton is hiring seasonal mowers! Interested candidates must be at least 18 years old. This position works 40 hours per week. Wages start at $14.52 per hour and will increase each summer you return to work with us.

Under the immediate supervision of the Park Supervisor, the seasonal abatement mower performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor in maintenance and construction tasks in the city parks, right of ways, waterways, and abatement properties. Primary responsibilities are manual labor assignments using hand tools, small power tools, and lawn mowers. This is a non-KPERS covered temporary position working during May through August.

• Mow, weedeat, and edge all parks, cemeteries, and public property.
• Mow and maintain abatement properties.
• Perform playground maintenance.
• Perform minor equipment maintenance.

• Other related duties as deemed necessary or as assigned.

Experience:

This is an entry level position. Some mower operation and general labor experience is desired. Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid Kansas driver's license with no restrictions at the time of hire.

Education:

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational experience preferred.

Skills:

Ability to attain knowledge of the operation, maintenance and safety guidelines of procedures and equipment used in this position. Ability to use a variety of hand tools. Capability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.

Limited problem solving exists in this position. Assignments follow prescribed policies and procedures.

Decision Making:

Accountability:
Employee is responsible for performing assigned duties efficiently and for the proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

All forms of communication are a requirement of this position, including verbal, written, and electronic. This communication shall include peer to peer, peer to supervisor, and peer to customer.

Personal Relations:
Continual contact with other city personnel and the public. Positive relations with the public are important.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Employee has no supervisory responsibility.

Working Conditions:

Manual labor is required, adverse weather conditions and working with pesticides are factors in this position. Exposure to equipment, noise, hazardous chemicals, and all types of weather conditions. The worker walks on uneven terrain and surfaces that may be slick from rain or oil.

Physical Requirements:

The Seasonal Abatement Mower's physical job demands include occasional maximum lift of 50 lbs from floor to shoulder; occasional maximum lift of 40 lbs waist to overhead; occasional maximum carry of 50 lbs 100 feet; occasional maximum horizontal push/pull force of 20 lbs; occasional maximum vertical pull force of 65 lbs; occasional maximum grip force of 60 lbs; frequent maximum grip force of 20 lbs;

occasional climb up to 25" ht, various ladders; frequent forward reach; occasional overhead reach; frequent bend; frequent bend/crouch; occasional crouch/kneel; frequent hand coordination; frequent foot coordination; frequent neck rotation; occasional trunk rotation; frequent balance; constant sitting; frequent standing and frequent walking.
