The U niversity of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College seeks qualified candidates for a Maintenance & Grounds Technician. Reporting to the Director of Maintenance & Grounds, this full-time non-exempt (hourly) position is offered with a comprehensive benefit package including health insurance, retirement, life and disability insurance, paid leave, educational benefits, and all other benefits associated with full-time employment.
Under general supervision, the Maintenance & Grounds Technician performs a variety of routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance activities at five (5) Rio campuses to ensure the safe, functional, and attractive operation of campus buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure. Responsibilities include building maintenance, grounds maintenance, event support, equipment operation, snow removal, shipping and receiving, and assisting with campus improvement projects. This position will travel regularly to multiple campuses in Jackson, McArthur, Piketon, Pomeroy, and Rio Grande (OH).
JOB DUTIES:General Operations
- Perform daily work orders and assignments as directed by the Director of Facilities or other supervisors.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and professional work environment.
- Comply with all applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in proper operating condition.
- Assist other maintenance and grounds personnel as needed.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on campus buildings and equipment.
- Complete basic carpentry repairs, installations, construction, and renovations.
- Perform minor plumbing repairs, including clearing drains, repairing leaks, and replacing fixtures.
- Perform minor electrical work such as replacing light bulbs, ballasts, switches, and fixtures.
- Prepare and paint buildings, rooms, equipment, and other campus facilities.
- Assist with appliance repairs, lock repairs, and other building maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Mow lawns, trim grass, edge sidewalks, weed landscaped areas, prune trees and shrubs, and remove brush.
- Plant and maintain trees, flowers, shrubs, mulch, and other landscape materials.
- Apply herbicides and fertilizers in accordance with safety guidelines and manufacturer recommendations.
- Maintain campus grounds in a clean, safe, and attractive condition by removing litter, debris, leaves, snow, and ice.
- Alter or improve landscape layouts as directed.
- Operate and maintain maintenance and grounds equipment, including:
- Lawn mowers
- Tractors
- Weed trimmers
- Leaf blowers
- Chainsaws
- Snow plows
- Forklifts
- Cherry pickers/aerial lifts
- Utility vehicles and pickup trucks
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment, including oil changes, filter replacement, lubrication, sharpening blades, cleaning, and basic repairs.
- Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs as necessary.
- Set up and tear down tables, chairs, stages, and equipment for campus events.
- Deliver, assemble, relocate, and install office furniture and equipment.
- Receive, unload, transport, and distribute campus mail, packages, supplies, and freight.
- Assist with loading and unloading vehicles and deliveries..
- Maintain accurate work orders and maintenance records.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent, 1 to 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be a steady, reliable worker.
- Must be able to read simple instructions and follow simple diagrams.
- Must be able to perform simple tasks independently after being given instructions.
- Must have general knowledge of simple equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be able to use snowplow blade on pickup truck.
- Willing to use personal vehicle to perform maintenance tasks on campus.
- Willing to be available and work flexible hours for weather related and emergency needs (i.e. early call in, weekend call in and after hours call back).
- Willing to participate in special training classes as required.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co- workers, campus community, and public.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors all year with exposure to extreme heat and cold temperatures/weather
- Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand tools and to paint.
- Must have sufficient strength and manual dexterity to operate power equipment.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to stand, crouch, and climb to use ladders and perform various types of manual labor.
- Must know how to operate power mowers, chain saw, power hedge trimmers, and power leaf removal equipment.
