JOB TITLE: ESL Teacher (Bilingual endorsement preferred)

QUALIFICATIONS: Professional Educator's License with an Endorsement in ESL PK-12

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Programs and Student Services

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:

To provide specialized language instruction to English Learners (ELs) in K-8, aiming to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Possesses knowledge of District policies and regulations relating to areas of responsibilities.

Develops and implements activities that encourage students to be life-long learners as well as develops language proficiency.

Develops and delivers customized lessons tailored to varying language proficiency levels in small groups or one-on-one.

Collaborates with classroom teachers, reading and math specialists, library/media specialists, and the technology coordinator to offer a continuum of services that support them in maximizing each child's opportunities for challenge and growth.

Screen new students using WIDA or other assessments, monitor progress, and administer state-wide mandated tests.

Co-teaches lessons rooted in principles of differentiation and development of language proficiency in English

Maintains and enhances professional knowledge in trends and technology in language proficiency by participating in various professional organizations and activities.

Works collaboratively with the Multilingual team to provide professional development for staff.

Uses data and research on best practices in multilingual instruction to guide curricular and instructional decisions.

Assists with the planning and coordinating of a Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee, if needed.

Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent to meet the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups, recognizing the physical limitations of the space provided.

Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as requested or needed.

Supervises students both in and out of the classroom.

Maintains professional competence through participation in District provided in-service activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to job responsibilities.

Performs other duties as assigned within contractual agreements.

Adheres to all provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

REQUIREMENTS:

Appropriate Bachelor's Degree required
Valid Illinois PEL with an Endorsement in English as a Second Language PK-12
Valid First Aid/CPR cards preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to actively perform work in classroom, office and other business and community settings. Ability to move freely and perform duties in numerous locations throughout the day (typically involving frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending and lifting). Exposure to noise and activity of a school setting. Exposure to weather conditions. Ability to travel outside the district for a variety of meetings and conferences.
