Niles Fire Department - Firefighter/Paramedic

Proof of citizenship or legal eligibility to work in the US: provide proof.

CPAT Certification:
Each applicant shall provide written proof of having passed the CPAT within the 12‑month period immediately prior to the application close date.

Certifications/licenses:
Basic Operation Firefighter Certification.

EMT and Paramedic Certification:
None required.

• Written Examination (required)
• Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (required)
• PST Personal History Statement (required within 7 days of passing exams)
• Minimum Age: 21 (No applicant 35 or older except as allowed by Illinois statute)
• Citizenship: U.S. citizen or proof of legal work eligibility.
• High School Diploma or GED (required)
• Driver's License (required)
• Confirmation of no felony convictions in Illinois or in other jurisdictions as defined by Illinois law.
• Ability to read, speak, and write English (required)
• Vision: correctable to 20/40 and no monochromatic vision.

At least one year of active military service in the United States.

Verified DD‑214 or proof of current reserve status.

Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or EMS: 5 points (not cumulative).

Bachelor’s Degree in any field: 2 points.

Verified by diploma and certified transcripts.

Additional points can be earned by:

• Illinois State Fire Marshal certified Basic Firefighter: 2 points.
• Illinois State or National EMT license: 3 points.
• Illinois State or National Paramedic license: 5 points.

Applicant may submit both categories for a maximum of 10 preference points.

Automatic:
No person convicted of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude (or the listed misdemeanors). Suspected drug use is a potential disqualifier.
