Job DescriptionPOSITION PURPOSE
The Head Custodian is responsible for keeping assigned building(s) clean, safe, functional, and secure in accordance with prescribed codes and established district policies and standards. A Head Custodian must maintain all assigned building(s) in a state of operational excellence such that they present no interruptions, distractions, or obstacles to the education program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Supervises, instructs, and directs custodians and district approved vendors/contractors, verbally or in writing in building, grounds, custodial, and routine preventive maintenance activities.
- Assists with administrative tasks involving custodial personnel and facilities as directed by the Facilities Manager.
- Coordinates, assigns, and inspects the work of assigned custodial staff, including regular review and revisions of custodial task assignment sheets. Provides guidance and training as needed. Submits reports to the Facilities Manager.
- Schedules and assigns extra time (overtime) for the custodians.
- Assists in maintaining seasonal grounds work (snow removal, lawn-mowing, etc.).
- Maintains inventory of custodial/maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Performs on-going preventive maintenance and minor repairs on electrical, plumbing, custodial equipment, ventilation, building structure and hardware, where licensing is not required.
- Performs operator adjustments and service to facility operational equipment such as, but the HVAC system, lighting controls, and security systems.
- Maintains records on all operational and maintenance activities.
- Provide services as necessary to support curricular and extracurricular events and activities.
- When necessary, clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, furniture, etc. in the building(s).
- Performs the duties of the custodian in their absence.
- Maintain work related records and prepare work reports as directed.
- Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
- Operate standard, district supplied office equipment including a copier, fax machine, computer, cell phone and assigned software; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
- Complies with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
- Project a positive image for the School District with their team.
- Work closely with the Athletic Director and Building Principal to be prepared for scheduled evening activities and unscheduled events as needed.
- Maintain building and grounds security by scheduling the opening/closing the building each school day and during special events as directed.
- Monitors and maintains web-based utility operating systems (lighting, HVAC, security, and others). Cross trains designated district employees for coverage during any scheduled or unscheduled absence.
- Work on call as needed for emergency repairs, equipment monitoring, overtime, or special needs falling outside of normal working hours.
- Responds to emergency calls for fire, security, vandalism, or other emergency calls within one hour.
- Identify and schedule work to be performed during summer, winter and spring breaks and track work progress.
- Accept other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or their designee.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors, including during both hot and cold weather. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes, dust, and odors.
The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Some evening and weekend work can be expected on a regular basis (i.e. more than twice per month). - There is a high probability that contact with blood-borne materials will occur within daily duties. All duties and procedures are to be performed within health safety standards as established by local and state OSHA and school district emergency procedures.
