The Job
Carteret County Government is seeking a Part-time Parks Maintenance Assistant to join the Parks & Recreation Facilities Maintenance team. Hiring rate $16.05 per hour. This position is scheduled 30 hours per week and qualifies for the County's insurance plans, retirement & 401(k) plan. Employee must contribute 6% of earnings into the Local Government Employees Retirement System.

The Job Description
General Statement of Duties
Performs intermediate skilled maintenance and repair work at park facilities and related facilities.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs maintenance activities at park facilities throughout the County. Work includes maintaining and repairing parks, ball fields, playground equipment, buildings and facilities. This includes repairing tables, grills, and sinks; cleaning restrooms and mowing. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Parks Maintenance Foreman and is evaluated through periodic discussions, observation and quality of work performed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
• Repairs and maintains park equipment and buildings.
• Performs plumbing, masonry, carpentry and minor electrical work.
• Collects trash and garbage and disposes of same.
• Mows grass, trims shrubbery and trees.
• Operates trucks and tractors in grounds preparation and maintenance work.
• Performs custodial duties at all parks and recreation facilities; answers patrons' questions; assists in setting facility up for usage as required.
• Performs minor building, custodial, repair and maintenance work.
• Services and maintains light automotive equipment.
• Marks off athletic fields and courts to prescribed standards

• General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work.
• General knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the standard building trades.
• Good knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to use common hand tools.
• Ability to operate simple machinery.
• Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
• Ability to be courteous and tactful in dealing with the public.
Physical Requirements
• Work requires the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
• Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms-length, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment.
• Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
• Worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Desirable
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and considerable experience in skilled trades and building and grounds maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays when required.
