Job Description
Starting Date: Aug 12, 2026
This is a 10‑month, part‑time custodial position for 20 hours per week. Wilkes County Schools offers a full benefits package including health insurance, annual leave, sick leave, holiday pay, dental, vision, life insurance, a state pension plan and a local salary supplement of 5%.
Nature of WorkPerform manual cleaning and maintenance of school buildings, including minor HVAC maintenance and other routine tasks, coordinating with supervisors as needed and working independently.
Duties and Responsibilities- Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax and buff floor surfaces.
- Clean restroom areas and replenish paper supplies and soap.
- Clean windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures.
- Dust and clean desks and other furniture.
- Empty trash receptacles and deposit recyclables in proper receptacles.
- Sweep sidewalks and walkways outside buildings; maintain grounds, pick up debris; shovel snow and apply de‑icing compounds as necessary.
- Replace burned‑out light bulbs.
- Prepare requisition forms for supplies.
- Set traps for rodents and other pests, disposing of trapped animals appropriately.
- Raise and lower flags at the start and end of the workday.
- Perform minor maintenance on appliances as able.
- Open and secure buildings; adjust lighting and HVAC at the start and end of the day.
- Arrange furniture for meetings or events.
- Assist with bus‑driving duties as required by hire date policy.
- Perform related work as required.
- Some experience in custodial work or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- For custodians hired on or after 09/01/2018, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements is required; otherwise, willingness to obtain the CDL is necessary.
- Physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
- Capable of exerting up to 50 lb of force occasionally, up to 25 lb frequently, and/or up to 10 lb constantly.
- Read simple forms and prepare timesheets/maintenance reports.
- Apply common sense to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
- Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Adapt to minimal stress levels.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
- Knowledge of cleaning procedures and use of cleaning materials.
- Follow instructions and perform medium physical work.
- Exercise independent judgment and initiative to complete assignments.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
