Headstart Custodian

Job Description: Under general supervision, performs a variety of light custodial work in the care and maintenance of Head Start building and facilities for the Rockingham County Schools Early Learning Head Start Program. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and taking out the trash, picking up debris, etc. Reports to the Head Start Director.

• Dust and clean desks and other furniture.
• Sweep, mop and vacuum floor surfaces.
• Clean restroom areas and replenish paper supplies and soap as necessary.
• Clean windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures.
• Empty trash receptacles and deposit recyclable material in proper receptacles.
• Sweep sidewalks, pick up debris or perform other routing custodial work on building grounds.
• Perform other related work as required.

• Knowledge of standard methods, materials and equipment employed in custodial and janitorial work.
• Knowledge of cleaning procedures and use of cleaning materials.
• Knowledge of local/state sanitation standards.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to perform medium physical work.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, etc. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands are for medium work.

• Some experience in custodial work or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid Driver’s License.
