Position:
Custodian Responsibilities

• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces.
• Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap.
• Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures.
• Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.
• Empties trash receptacles and deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
• Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside buildings, polices grounds, picks up debris, shovels snow and/or applies de‑icing compounds to walkways and driveways as needed.
• Replaces burned‑out light bulbs.
• Prepares requisition forms for supplies each workweek; sets pest traps and disposes trapped animals appropriately.
• Raises and lowers flags at the start and end of the workday.
• Performs minor maintenance on appliances as needed.
• Opens and secures buildings; adjusts lighting, heating, and air conditioning as required.
• Arranges furniture for meetings or events; performs related tasks.

Some experience in custodial work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Physical ability to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.; able to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
• Capability to compare and judge functional characteristics of data and items.
• Strong interpersonal communication to convey information and receive instructions.
• Reading simple forms and preparing time sheets and maintenance reports.
• Applying common sense and problem‑solving in routine situations.
• Verbal and written communication competency in standard English.
• Basic arithmetic (addition and subtraction) and ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
• Motor coordination for handling janitorial equipment.
• Manual dexterity and minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
• Adaptability to minimal stress situations.

• General knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
• Knowledge of cleaning procedures and use of cleaning materials.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Capacity to perform medium physical work.
• Independent judgment and initiative to complete work assignments.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessary.
