Custodian Summer Student Assistants

Job Description

North Reading Public Schools is hiring multiple Custodian Summer Student Assistants for the summer of 2026. The role includes maintaining school facilities and outdoor grounds. The position is full‑time for 36 hours per week over 8–9 weeks (June to August, Monday‑Friday).

• Work with the Director of Facilities, Head Custodians, and custodial staff to complete summer custodian projects and cleaning
• Outside grounds crew (if assigned): mowing, raking, weeding, edging, and mulching
• Snow and ice removal as needed (snow blower, shovel, ice‑melt bags)
• Assist with cafeteria cleanup, including folding tables and mop duties
• General custodial duties: dry‑mopping, wet‑mopping, trash removal, moving up to 70 lb items, using ladders up to 12 ft
• Input data into computer and read printed material

Requires strenuous effort, moderate to heavy physical activity. Must stand most of the shift, frequently bend, twist, reach, stoop, kneel or crouch. Must lift or move up to 70 lb, and occasionally up to 50 lb bags. Use of handheld tools and ladders is required. Visual perception and color discrimination needed. Proficiency with computer input and reading is required.

• Past custodial, janitorial, landscaping or cleaning experience preferred
• Hardworking, energetic, works well with colleagues, and can work independently
• Citizenship, residency or work visa required
• Ability to perform physical demands described above

Position Type: Full‑Time

Salary: $16 per hour
