Position: Locksmith at US Veterans Health Administration Northampton, MA

Summary

This position is located in the VA Central Western Massachusetts Health Care System – Edward P. Boland VA Medical Center in Leeds, MA. The Locksmith is responsible for repairing, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing a wide variety of locking devices found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations.

Duties

The work requires knowledge of the construction, operation, and functional characteristics of locking devices and skill in manufacturing replacement parts, devising or changing combinations, establishing master keying systems, neutralizing lockouts, and performing installation and repair processes such as filing, drilling, chiseling, and grinding. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performing the full range of work in the installation, repair, maintenance and modification of a wide variety of commercial locking devices with varying makes and models
  • Providing expert advice and recommendations to management on the most appropriate locks/systems for specific security requirements
  • Designing and installing locks and integrated locking systems, including electronic panic button interfaces, to meet special security requirements and management needs
  • Increasing the level of key control and security by modifying keyways and key blanks to create local‑unique combinations
  • Maintaining expert knowledge of locks and associated hardware, new products, and regulatory requirements affecting work
  • Troubleshooting to determine malfunctioning components and repairing by reworking existing parts based on knowledge of internal structure and operating characteristics
  • Determining precise locations and angles for drilling without harming the contents or causing irrevocable damage to the locking mechanisms or containers
  • Using a large variety of intricate tools to perform this work and providing maintenance
  • Making operational tests to assure devices function properly
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:00 a.m. to 03:30 p.m.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK

CONDITIONS:

Work assignments require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods, and working in cramped or awkward positions. The incumbent must lift items up to approximately 50 pounds. Work is performed in a well‑lit, heated, and ventilated area; occasionally outside in inclement weather. The incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and serious burns.
