License and Certification Qualifications
  • Georgia POST Basic Law Enforcement certification; pass criminal history, psychological and polygraph test; valid Georgia driver license required.
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field required.
Experience Qualifications
  • Seven years of law‑enforcement experience required.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsible for assisting a school cluster, comprising several individual locations, and for aiding the school administration and staff in creating a safe and secure environment for students by proactively planning to prevent safety and security problems, responding to disruptions or criminal activity, and instilling respect and understanding of the law in students through education and example.

  • Assist the local school administration by providing a safe and secure environment for students.
    • Provide local school administrators and personnel with the resources to operate a safe and secure school.
    • Provide in-service training to help administrators be better prepared to deal with security‑related matters.
  • Act as liaison/facilitator between the school and local law‑enforcement agencies.
    • Coordinate the law‑enforcement efforts of the local jurisdiction relative to schools.
    • Work within a school cluster.
    • Develop a communication network between administration, staff, students, parents, and citizens.
    • Be a positive role model to bridge the gap between students and law‑enforcement to prevent crime.
  • Maintain knowledge of procedures for dealing with public agencies that come into schools to deliver subpoenas, interview students and/or teachers, and arrest individuals.
  • Reduce juvenile delinquency by promoting positive relationships between youth and law‑enforcement.
  • Take law‑enforcement action as necessary to protect against unwanted intruders.
  • Assist proactively the administration in developing plans for a safe school environment for staff and students.
    • Facilitate the completion of safety and security assessments and plans for improvement, as well as emergency plans.
  • Plan and help conduct emergency drills on a routine basis.
    • Set and reset fire alarms for drills or real emergencies.
  • Advise on appropriate law‑enforcement measures when an incident is perceived as a violation of the law.
  • Be available for conferences and consultations with students, parents, and staff to address law‑enforcement or crime‑prevention issues.
    • Make referrals available to other agencies within the school system and community for additional assistance.
  • Create and maintain written case files of criminal acts by students and report of deprived, abused, or neglected children.
    • Share information with the administrator, school social worker, agencies in the law‑enforcement and judiciary systems, and the Department of Family and Child Services (DFACS) when appropriate.
  • Physical Demands

    Employees must stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs, run, sit, climb and/or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. They must be able to listen more closely than normal to accurately perceive information, and have the required vision abilities (close, distance, peripheral, color discernment). Employees must maintain appropriate physical standards, including agility, strength and stamina, to respond to emergencies, restrain and apprehend suspects, lift and push or pull objects up to 100 pounds, and operate a motor vehicle.
