Under minimal supervision, independently manages execution and timely completion of engineering safety projects for medical products, laboratory equipment, consumer technology equipment, and other devices. Complete investigations by analyzing project scope, determining specifications, designing test programs, examining samples, and preparing technical reports for clients. Assists in development of UL requirements, test methods, and equipment for complex, new or unusual products. Exercises Project Handler Signature Authority as Project Handler for opening, maintenance, completion, and closing of assigned projects and may exercise Review Signature Authority as Reviewer of record for initial, status, and final technical reviews.
Requires hands‑on laboratory work and mentorship of junior staff.

- Determine project scope, develop preliminary investigation plan, and set specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements based on client input and product data. May include travel to client sites.
- Communicate with clients to promote services, explain UL procedures, negotiate project details, resolve concerns, and provide technical assistance.
- Design appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements; familiar with IEC 60601‑1, ISO 14971, and IEC 61010‑1.
- Examine samples for UL compliance and notify clients of deficiencies or changes in scope.
- Coordinate laboratory activities, prepare data sheets, schedule technicians, manage project timelines, and conduct testing when required; serve as Project Handler or Reviewer as assigned.
- Report project status and results to clients through contact and reports; prepare Follow‑Up Service Procedures and informational pages; integrate continuous improvement concepts.
- Resolve engineering issues related to Variation Notices and analyze variation acceptability.
- Develop new or revised UL requirements and special test methods; analyze test programs; perform File Reviews as directed; represent UL at industry functions.
- Provide complex sales support, including client presentations.
- Perform quality system and technical audits of customer laboratories.
- Direct, review, or train staff and entry‑level engineers; provide technical assistance to laboratory and field staff.
- Follow Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and security practices.
- Perform other duties as directed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with strong electrical focus from an ABET‑accredited program.
- Minimum 3 years of medical device or laboratory equipment compliance experience with ISO 60601 and 61010 knowledge.
- Preferred additional experience as Evaluator in 60601 and 61010 series collateral and standards.
- Demonstrated project‑handling experience in relevant technical areas.
- Knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory testing apparatus and techniques.
- Strong communication skills with customers.
- Ability to devise unique solutions to complex problems.
