Davenport Screw Machinist - Setup and Operators

Northbrook machine shop is seeking a Screw Machinist to set up and operate the following machines:

• Gildemeister
• Davenport
• ACME
• Brown & Sharpe
• New Britain

Sets up and operates one or more single or multi-spindle lathe-type and/or CNC screw machines equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms to perform turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on bar stock on a custom basis, analyzing specifications and deciding on tooling according to knowledge of screw‑machine operations. Performs the following duties in a safe and efficient manner consistent with established procedures using assigned personal protective equipment.

• Studies blueprint, visualizes machining to be done, dimensions of parts permissible tolerances, and plans sequence of operations, using company supplied process sheets when appropriate.
• Visualizes movements of machine parts, work pieces, and tools in each operation in relation to others, to assure efficient use of tools and time.
• Selects cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cuts, and cutting tools to be used on basis of process sheets.
• Installs collets, bushings, and stock pushers in stock‑feeding mechanism, using wrenches and screwdrivers.
• Installs and adjusts cams, gears, and stops to control stock and tool movements at each station.
• Positions and secures tools in tool holders, verifying positions with gauges and other measuring instruments.
• Moves controls to set cutting speeds and feed rates.
• Loads material, starts machine, observes operation, and verifies conformance to specifications of first‑run and sample work pieces, using such instruments as fixed gauges, calipers and micrometers.
• Runs machine through cycle, stopping machine and adjusting tool positions and machine controls to allow for such factors as timing, clearance between moving parts, and chip removal.
• Visually inspects production for burrs, scrapes, rust and other defects.
• Verifies conformance of production to specifications using gages, micrometers and calipers, etc.
• Replaces worn tools.
• Operates bench grinder or cutter‑grinding machine to sharpen tools.
• Sets up machines for other workers; trains and assists operator as needed on difficult jobs or unusual work instructions and adjusts or re‑sets work.
• Is responsible for maintenance of machine, including but not limited to lubrication and adjustment and repairs of equipment per manufacturer’s manual.
• Inspects and measures parts to maintain statistical process control charts when required.
• Updates data collection system at beginning and end of each task using barcode scanning and basic data entry.
• Maintains organized and clean work area.
• Receives, understands and follows all written and oral instruction.
• Communicates all problems and other work‑related issues to supervisor.
• Completes all paperwork associated with the position in a timely manner, including move tags.
• Complies with all company policies and procedures including safety and attendance requirements.
• Participates in activities to increase personal skill level, overall departmental processes and product quality.
• Resolves day‑to‑day issues by working effectively with others.
• Maintains meet or exceed rating on all performance evaluations.
• Follows all job‑related instructions and performs other job‑related duties as requested, subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
• Trains operators on how to run and collect data per control plan.

• Minimum of 2 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.
• Strong mechanical ability to operate and troubleshoot equipment and machinery.
• Basic math and English skills for part count, written and verbal work instruction.
• Ability to read blueprints, piece prints, work instructions and use measuring equipment.
• Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify changes in order to alert department lead.
• Mastered the act of setting up multi‑spindle screw machines.

Position is full‑time, on‑site.
