Job Description
Substitute School Custodian SUMMARYKeeps the school building clean, orderly, and well‑maintained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Performs duties involved in keeping the school clean, orderly, and well‑maintained, such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming classrooms, offices, hallways, and stairs; cleaning chalkboards; emptying pencil sharpeners; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and drinking fountains; and emptying trash/garbage containers.
- Performs the routine duties involved in keeping the school clean, orderly, and well‑maintained with regard to painting, window washing, removal and re‑application of floor wax, carpet cleaning, and minor activities involved with system utilities.
- Moves furniture and/or equipment as directed by the head custodian.
- Complies with local and state laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Performs light snow removal and salt application to icy walkways.
- Participates in training as directed by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
- Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED), or three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate in one‑on‑one and small group situations to Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, Head Custodian, principal/assistant principal, and other employees of the corporation.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSSuccessful completion of an AHERA Awareness Training Program.
OTHER SKILLSAbility to operate all custodial cleaning equipment. Ability to maintain and model a positive attitude towards students, peers, and other employees.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit;
stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; or stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to work from a stepladder. The employee is required to operate custodial cleaning equipment. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work environment is smoke free.
Hourly wages. Salary and benefits to be determined by the School Board.
