Facilities Maintenance Foreman

The Norwich Free Academy is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Foreman. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Foreman provides day-to-day leadership, supervision, coordination, and direction of Facilities Department maintenance staff. The Foreman ensures that maintenance work is appropriately prioritized, assigned, completed safely, and performed to established standards. The Foreman works collaboratively with the Facilities Manager to maintain Norwich Free Academy's buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure in a safe, clean, orderly, and operational condition and assists with maintenance planning, repairs, renovations, projects, contractor and vendor coordination, emergency response, and department operations.

This is a 12 month, full time position. Full benefits package, including vacation, holidays, health insurance, and participation in a 401(k). Hourly rate range: $33.60-$36.14.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily leadership, supervision, coordination, and direction to Facilities Department maintenance staff.
  • Prepare and assign daily workloads, prioritize work orders and maintenance requests, and monitor progress based on campus needs, employee skills, and available resources.
  • Monitor employee schedules, time sheets, attendance, and daily work activities and communicate staffing or performance concerns to the Facilities Manager.
  • Direct and assist staff with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, grounds, and general maintenance and repair work.
  • Inspect completed maintenance work for quality and completeness and ensure identified deficiencies are addressed.
  • Identify recurring building, equipment, and maintenance concerns and recommend corrective measures to the Facilities Manager.
  • Conduct required semi-annual asbestos inspections and assist with inspections, testing, documentation, and corrective actions related to building and life-safety systems.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices and the proper use of tools, equipment, machinery, and personal protective equipment.
  • Coordinate and supervise snow removal, sanding, salting, de-icing, and severe-weather operations, including Facilities staff and outside contractors, and monitor campus conditions to ensure entrances, walkways, roadways, parking areas, and other priority areas are appropriately addressed.
  • Assist the Facilities Manager with maintenance planning, repairs, renovations, construction, capital projects, and other Facilities Department projects, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary costs, and make effective use of department resources.
  • Serve as a daily liaison with contractors and vendors, including coordinating access, scheduling, work areas, and operational requirements and reporting concerns or deficiencies to the Facilities Manager.
  • Train and orient Facilities Department employees regarding maintenance responsibilities, equipment, work expectations, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain Facilities Department work records, inspection documentation, reports, and related maintenance records.
  • Meet regularly with the Facilities Manager to review outstanding work, staffing, projects, safety issues, building concerns, and department priorities.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance needs, building system failures, severe weather events, and other Facilities Department emergencies and perform maintenance assignments as necessary.
  • Perform other Facilities-related duties as assigned by the Head of School, Facilities Manager, or designee.

  • Promote safe, efficient, productive, and professional maintenance operations.
  • Maintain effective communication with Facilities staff, contractors, vendors, and the Facilities Manager.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, dependability, accountability, and responsiveness to building and maintenance needs.
  • Ensure Facilities work is completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent movement throughout NFA's buildings and grounds and work in mechanical rooms, construction areas, elevated locations, confined spaces, and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, and other physical activities associated with facilities maintenance operations.
