Position Overview
Part‑time custodian reporting to the Principal/Lead Custodian. This role is non‑exempt and works 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday, providing staff and students with a safe, attractive, clean, and efficient learning environment.
QualificationsThe custodian should demonstrate the ability to perform the tasks listed and complete assigned duties in accordance with established time and quality control guidelines.
Responsibilities- Keep building, premises, and entryways – including stairways, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas – neat and clean at all times.
- Clean assigned areas daily to specified standards:
- Classrooms – clean desktops, whiteboards, door windows, outside windows; dusting high and low; empty trash and replace pencil sharpeners; sweep/vacuum, dust mop, or wet mop classroom floors.
- Bathrooms – clean toilets, urinals, sinks, partition walls, mirrors; empty trash; refill soap, toilet paper, paper towels, sanitary products; sweep and mop restroom floor.
- Hallways – sweep, dust, mop, auto‑scrub, burnish hallways; clean and polish water fountains.
- Maintain custodial closets as directed; regulate HVAC systems to provide appropriate temperatures and efficient use of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Raise and lower cafeteria tables; lock/unlock doors as required.
- Perform body fluid clean‑up; change and install light bulbs and pencil sharpeners.
- Perform shift‑specific duties:
- Inside responsibilities for AM or PM shift.
- Outside responsibilities for AM or PM shift: raise and lower the United States flag daily, keep grounds free from trash and litter, maintain dumpster area, mow and trim grounds, remove graffiti, manage snow/ice removal, maintain play areas, wash windows, load/unload deliveries and supplies, move furniture or equipment as directed, attend required training, assist with event set‑up and clean‑up, and provide security after events.
- Assist in cafeteria as needed; perform emergency repairs or cleaning services as required.
- Maintain a neat, clean personal appearance and wear district uniforms at all times while on duty.
- Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.
- Maintain custodial tools and equipment and report immediately any damage or needed repairs.
- Work in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and assist with snow shoveling when needed.
Maintain confidentiality and communicate clearly, making appropriate decisions and exercising sound judgment.
Physical DemandsRegularly reach, climb, bend, stand, and walk; use hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders; use hands and fingers to handle objects and controls; lift up to 50 pounds routinely and occasionally lift, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds; frequently push or pull items such as desks, tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines.
Environmental ConditionsOccasional work in extreme heat or cold.
Terms of EmploymentEmployment is at‑will for 12 months. A work calendar will show the specific daily schedule and may be modified by the Board of Education at any time. The position may be assigned to a day or evening shift; the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel will establish a definite daily schedule.
EvaluationAnnual performance evaluations occur at year end in accordance with the Board’s policy on support staff evaluation.
