Under the general direction of the Building Commissioner, the electrical inspector performs tasks that identify or prevent violations of the Chicago Electrical Code.
Distinguishing Features of PositionThe incumbent is responsible for performing electrical inspections for the City of Oak Forest on an as-needed basis and for performing tasks that identify or prevent violations of the Chicago Electrical Code. The incumbent performs scheduled inspections of residential and commercial projects for applicable construction codes, including but not limited to: solar panel installation, swimming pool electrical, and electrical service upgrades.
The incumbent performs assigned tasks with minimal supervision on routine assignments in accordance with defined procedures.
- Reviews residential and commercial plans for conformance with applicable codes.
- Prepares written work products, such as correction notices or other correspondence to property owners and contractors outlining necessary corrections required to assure code compliance for projects under construction.
- Responds to inquiries/questions from contractors/homeowners as needed.
- Emergency complaints and situations will be handled on an as-needed basis.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret the Chicago Electrical Code.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Problem‑solving and prioritization capabilities.
- Basic knowledge of document imaging, scanning, and database management.
- Sound judgment to make decisions in the course of work.
- Must be comfortable utilizing email/electronic calendar in order to receive inspections and permit details from clerical staff.
- A bachelor's degree is required, or the candidate should have at least four years of experience as an active, licensed electrician with journeyman/master status in the electrical trade.
- Previous experience as an electrical inspector is preferred but not required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.

Work is generally performed indoors and in residential or business settings. Some work may be performed in an office setting. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, talk, and hear. The duties require the use of hands to operate computers, telephones, various tools, and office equipment. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
PayRate
The electrical inspector is paid $45.00 per inspection. This is a part‑time, non‑union position.
