Distinguishing Features of PositionThe work involves assisting the director and/or assistant director with activities related to development review, zoning administration, economic development, and long-range planning. This position is also responsible for compiling reports and providing analyses of proposed community development projects. The position also works directly with consultants and provides direction and review of consultant comments.
Illustrative Examples of WorkAs a planning professional, work is performed utilizing independent judgment and necessary coordinated resources. Examples of work include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Review and process zoning, subdivision, annexation, and development petitions for compliance with City ordinances and prepare professional analyses and recommendations.
- Coordinates interdepartmental review process of zoning subdivisions and business license applications, and ensures proper and coordinated communications.
- Prepares written staff reports, findings of fact, presentations, and recommendations for the Planning and Zoning Commission and other boards or City Council as assigned
- Serves as a staff liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission, including preparing agendas, staff reports, presentations, meeting materials, and attending meetings to present recommendations and provide technical assistance.
- Assists homeowners, developers, and builders with technical requests, zoning interpretations and other required assistance.
- Undertake research and zoning studies and make appropriate recommendations for zoning amendments and procedural changes.
- Perform special projects for the Director and Assistant Director.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned.
- Knowledge of the principles of land use planning and zoning.
- Knowledge of local government organization and internal functions.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and through written means.
- Ability to enforce zoning and development codes with firmness and tact.
- Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects and work as part of a team.
- Ability to work autonomously, managing tasks without constant supervision.
- Have a proactive and problem-solving orientation.
- Ability to attend evening meetings and work occasional hours outside of the normal business day, as required.
A minimum of one year of full-time experience in a municipal planning department or closely related environment is required. Internship experience in municipal planning may be considered towards required experience. A bachelor's degree in planning, geography, public administration, or a closely related field is required. A master's degree in planning, geography, public administration, or a closely related field is highly desired.
AICP certification is preferred. Proficiency in the use of standard office software and technology required.

Work is performed in an indoor, office setting, though project site visits may be required in conjunction with zoning, development, or business-related petitions. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, talk, and hear. The duties require the use of hands to operate computers, telephone, and office equipment. Due to prolonged computer use, close vision and the ability to focus are required.
The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
The starting salary range is $70,020-$94,742 depending on qualifications. The estimated salary is +/- $72,000. This is a full-time, non-union position and includes excellent benefit options.
