School Bus Mechanic

Position Summary

The School Bus Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and safety inspection of the District's fleet of school buses and other transportation vehicles. This role ensures all vehicles are in safe operating condition and compliant with state and federal regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on school buses and district vehicles, including, but not limited to, brake inspections, tire service, and safety checks.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, and HVAC systems on school buses and other district vehicles.
  • Ability to use standard and specialized tools and garage equipment.
  • Conduct safety inspections in accordance with Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) standards.
  • Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, and inspection documentation in compliance with ISBE and IDOT requirements.
  • Prepare vehicles for state bus inspections and perform any needed repairs to meet certification standards.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform on-site repairs as needed.
  • Maintain an orderly, safe, and clean maintenance shop and storage area.
  • Order and maintain an inventory of parts and supplies in coordination with the Director of Transportation.
  • Coordinate warranty and recall services with vendors.
  • Assist with snow removal and general property maintenance during winter months.
  • Serve as a substitute bus driver when necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a CDL with School Bus Endorsement preferred or required within designated timeframe.
  • Certification or demonstrated experience in diesel and/or automotive mechanics preferred.
  • Knowledge of IDOT and ISBE transportation safety regulations.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physical labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Dependable, safety-minded, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must pass background check and drug screening as required by the school corporation.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary commensurate with experience, starting at $60,000 annually.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance available with generous board-paid portions, life insurance, paid holidays, and vacation time. Insurance starts on 1st day of full-time employment.
  • This position is full-time, 8 hours per day and 260 days per year.
