STATE PROFILE SUMMARY
May supervise, guide and instruct the work assignments of staff or serve as lead/subject matter expert (SME). Studies the composition, structure and other physical aspects of the earth. Examine minerals, underground water, waste disposal, land reclamation or other environmental problems to determine physical and chemical properties to ensure quality standards. Conducts field and lab studies to determine geological properties of assigned location.
JOBRESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs job responsibilities with minimal supervision
- Serves as job expert or organization resource in assigned areas
- Advise construction firms and government agencies on road construction, foundation design and land use and resource management.
- Assembles, operates, and maintains field and laboratory testing, measuring and mechanical equipment; collects and prepares and fluid samples for analysis.
- Acquire, maintain and disseminate knowledge of developing technologies regarding aggregate characteristics and performance in construction applications
- Review and edit written reports, maps and data of other professionals and provide technical assistance on a wide variety of geologic topics as needed. Write technical and professional reports regarding results of investigations.
- Inspect construction projects to analyze problems, apply geological knowledge and use testing equipment and drilling machinery
- Review environmental reports to ensure adherence to state and federal laws and rules
- Supervises and plans work of assigned staff
The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Qualifications.
STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS- Associates degree in geology, geologic sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of job-related experience or
- One (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Geologist 3 (LSP
052) or position equivalent.
- Three (3) years of Supervisory experience comparable to a Group Leader, Section or Unit Head in a geological related environment
- Knowledge of rock and soil types, properties, geological maps and literature relevant to the State of Georgia.
- Experience reading and interpreting specifications, plans, contract documents, construction and testing manuals, and other resources.
- Experience composing and preparing specifications, technical reports and general correspondence
- Knowledge of computer applications necessary to operate engineering-analysis programs.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to production and placement of materials, including percentages and formulas
- Ability to solve analytical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques.
- Committed to providing quality customer service
- Possession of a Geologist in Training or Professional Geologist license.
- Experience preparing engineering and geological reports.
- Experience representing the Department in meetings with aggregate producers and the Georgia Construction Aggregate Association to resolve problem issues.
