Overview

Accountable for the positioning and immobilization of patients and proper selection of technical factors along with computer reformatting of acquired data to obtain magnetic resonance scans of optimal quality.

Responsibilities
  • Selects appropriate technical factors on an individual patient and procedural basis to provide optimal quality examinations.
  • Performs post processing of computer data to enhance data and image information.
  • Operates support equipment for MRI, such as: independent workstation, additional disc drives, pressure injector, patient monitoring system, PACS.
  • Transfers patients to and from MRI scanning table and prepares patient for examination by explaining procedure and answering questions.
  • Initiates IVs for administration of contrast media for MRI enhancement in accordance with departmental policy and universal precautions.
  • Follows the technologist workflow to send documentation to PACS, including steps in Rad Net and related checks before finalizing cases.
  • Archives images to optical discs.
Safety and Compliance
  • Maintains magnetic safety standards.
  • Maintains fire safety standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of department Code Blue policy and disaster, evacuation and quench policies.
  • Maintains universal and infectious safety standards and documents equipment malfunctions.
  • Attends mandatory in-services and promotes patient safety through reporting and participation in safety initiatives.
Documentation and Department Records
  • Obtains and documents history from patient, patient’s chart or family to provide radiologist with adequate information for interpretation and to ensure procedural criteria are met.
  • Assists in obtaining confidential history including lab values and allergy screening to ensure appropriateness of patient for examination and contrast administration.
  • Documents patient history, charge data, allergic reactions or incidents, and provides information for inventory of supplies; assists in scheduling.
Professional Development
  • Keeps abreast of current magnetic resonance and radiological skills and new developments in the field.
  • Attends in-services and educational seminars; may instruct other technologists and work with students when required.
Interactions and Professional Standards
  • Maintains good relations with internal and external customers and follows Advocate Standards of Behavior; uses AIDET when interacting with patients, family members, and visitors.
Education/Experience Required
  • Graduate of an approved Radiologic Technology program and/or 1 year as an MRI Technologist or graduate of a certificate program in MRI Technology.
Certification/License
  • Registered Technologist (RT) with ARRT and/or MRI certification; must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not already held, or CAMRT/ARMRIT MRI certification within 6 months of hire as applicable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and routine MRI procedures. ARRT Registry, CPR Certification; MRI registry eligible; must pass MRI boards within 6 months of hire.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to work overtime; weekend rotation and flexible hours; attends safety in-services; respond to work at short notice.
  • Exposure to radiation; ability to operate portable equipment; ability to deal with extremely ill patients; communicate with patients; adjust to flexible work hours; participate in on-call program.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds with patient handling equipment as needed; specific lifting limits may apply; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals; ability to attend out-of-town site visits.
