Job RequirementsThe Substitute School Nurse provides day-to-day health services in the absence of the regularly assigned school nurse. Assignments may be at any District building, as assigned by the District. The Substitute School Nurse works directly with students, staff, and parents/guardians to provide care for illness and injury, respond to medical emergencies, administer medications, and carry out existing medical orders, Individualized Healthcare Plans, and Emergency Care Plans.
The position requires sound clinical judgment, accurate documentation, and strict confidentiality of student health information.

- Previous experience and skills as requested by School Administration

Essential Functions & ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, ability, physical demands and working conditions required of this position.
- Demonstrate support of the Oak Lawn-Hometown School District #123 Strategic Framework.
- Uphold the established Board of Education policies, regulations, and administrative procedures.
- Review substitute notes, health alerts, Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs) left by the regularly assigned nurse at the start of each assignment.
- Serve as the health care provider in the school during the assignment, meeting student health needs with an understanding of normal growth and development in children and youth as well as students with special needs.
- Use the nursing process to assess student health concerns, intervene, and evaluate care.
- Provide health care for chronic and acute illness, as well as injuries in the school setting.
- Respond to medical emergencies, including administering emergency medications as ordered, using an AED, and contacting emergency services when needed, according to District policy.
- Safely administer and monitor medications that are required during the school day according to policy and in compliance with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
- Perform health care procedures as ordered by students' health care providers.
- Implement existing IHPs and ECPs.
- Receive and implement medical orders and communicate medical information to the appropriate staff as needed.
- Follow District illness exclusion guidelines when determining whether a student should be sent home.
- Identify signs of contagious illness and report concerns to the regularly assigned nurse or Building Principal according to public health guidelines and District policy.
- Be alert to potential safety hazards in the school environment and participate in reporting and remedying unsafe conditions.
- Follow established school safety and emergency plans.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student illness or injury as needed.
- Document health office visits, care provided, and medication administration in the District's student information system.
- Maintain an orderly health office setting during the assignment.
- Communicate health office activity and follow-up needs to the regularly assigned nurse or Building Principal at the end of the assignment.
