Terms and Conditions: Part-time during the school year.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Music Director for Oak Park and River Forest High School is part of the production’s artistic team. The Music Director is responsible for running rehearsals, teaching all vocal and instrumental music for the production, and conducting the orchestra pit during performances. This role collaborates with the director and artistic team to realize the production vision and works with both students and adults in a collaborative capacity.

Qualifications

Experience leading or teaching a diverse group of students

Proven experience in theatrical musical direction

Musical expertise in both vocal and instrumental areas

Ability to recruit, teach, mentor and work with student actors and musicians

Understanding of a range of styles and cultural/historical elements of the production’s music

Excellent communication and people skills

Creativity and attention to detail

Ability to collaborate with the director and production staff

Organized with a positive attitude

Ability to meet sponsor expectations as stated in the Student Activities Sponsor Handbook

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Attend and contribute to production meetings ahead of auditions

Audition singers and make casting recommendations to the director

Schedule music rehearsals in collaboration with the director, choreographer and stage manager

Teach the cast and orchestra their music

Lead music rehearsals for principals, chorus and orchestra

Support, attend and contribute to full cast rehearsals

Conductor for tech week and production

In consultation with the director, select student orchestra members and rehearsal accompanist

Work with the sound designer to coordinate microphone use and sound balance

Study script and music to understand music requirements in terms of setting, era and character attributes

Run sitzprobe rehearsal

Supervise students in the Green Room, rehearsal spaces and performance spaces

Set up and break down orchestra pit instruments and equipment with the musicians

Return all music and script materials to the publisher promptly after production

Attend sponsor meetings and meet expectations set by the Student Activities Director
