TITLE:
Teacher
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the supervision of the school principal, responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes, and performs related duties as required.
Essential functions include instructional planning with written lesson plans and preparation aligned to instructional program objectives; establishing positive learning expectation standards; evaluating pupil progress and maintaining accurate records of achievement; implementing instructional methods and applying contemporary learning theory and teaching methodologies; selecting and using instructional materials; participating in development and implementation of new teaching techniques; maintaining classroom, school grounds, and cafeteria discipline in line with the Chicago Public Schools’ Uniform Discipline Code;
maintaining attendance records and seating charts; promoting student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept; communicating with parents or guardians and counseling pupils on academic progress, attendance, and conduct; coordinating class field trips as needed; participating in in-service and professional staff meetings; may engage in extra-curricular and after-school activities; using available community resources.
Education and Experience:
Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and all coursework required to obtain the appropriate teaching certificate(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
License Requirements:
Teachers must possess at least one of the following valid teaching licenses issued by the Illinois State Board of
Education:
Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), properly endorsed for this position.
Knowledge, Abilities, and
Skills:
Knowledge of subject matter aligned with state certification requirements; knowledge of contemporary teaching principles and practices; knowledge of classroom and behavior management techniques.
Ability:
Modify instruction to meet student needs; cooperate with the school faculty and administration in program development and implementation; work effectively with pupils, parents/guardians, staff, and community representatives; understand the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional patterns of pupils.
Skill:
Apply contemporary teaching principles and practices; good oral and written communication; good interpersonal skills; sound and professional judgment.
Physical demands:
Light Work—exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Includes occasional stooping, reaching, handling, talking and hearing, and near/far visual acuity.
