Overview

The Special Education Teacher position supports student learning by committing to evidence-based instructional strategies and program planning. The role is pivotal in fostering the comprehensive development of students with diverse needs. The teacher will adapt the general education curriculum to address student needs, create a balanced instructional program tailored to individual needs, and ensure accurate tracking of student development through assessment, progress monitoring, and adherence to IEPs.

Effective communication and collaboration with parents, administrators, and fellow educators will be essential, as will administrative responsibilities including meticulous record-keeping and compliance with state and federal regulations. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Instruction and Program Planning:
    • Employ special educational strategies, including evidence-based instruction, to support development in sensory and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
    • Adapt and supplement the general education curriculum to meet diverse student needs.
    • Plan and conduct activities that create a balanced program of instruction.
    • Apply knowledge of child guidance principles for students with special education needs and manage appropriate student conduct.
    • Coordinate integration of students with special needs into the general education environment.
  • Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    • Establish and follow each student’s IEP to support development across educational, physical, social, and emotional domains.
    • Prepare progress reports and report cards as appropriate; maintain accurate student records and progress data.
    • Observe, evaluate, collect, and analyze data on academic, behavioral, and communication performance; administer district and state assessments and adjust instruction based on data.
  • Communication and

    Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with parents, general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and other school professionals.
    • Serve as a resource for students, parents, and district personnel; respond to inquiries and interpret student needs.
    • Attend and participate in team meetings; use problem-solving to determine intervention plans as prescribed by tiered interventions.
    • Develop individual education plans in collaboration with families and educators to promote holistic development.
  • Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Prepare and maintain records and reports related to student progress and behavior; provide official records to families and district personnel as requested.
    • Coordinate and conduct team meetings and implement recommendations; maintain data and reports as required.
  • Professional Development and Compliance:
    • Provide instruction that complies with state and federal laws, district policies, and regulations.
    • Prepare data for local, state, and federal reports; participate in professional meetings and training to maintain instructional best practices as a special education teacher.
  • Supervision and Training:
    • Train and provide guidance to assigned personnel; organize in-services for parents or staff as directed.
  • Operational Duties:
    • Operate classroom equipment and software; monitor department expenditures as appropriate.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • May assist students with toileting and hygiene needs; perform related duties as assigned.
Content Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Familiarity with applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures in special education.
  • Effective oral and written communication; strong interpersonal skills with tact and courtesy.
  • Proficiency in operating office and classroom equipment and software; ability to relate to students with special needs.
