St. Mary’s Center operates transitional housing, a senior center, and preschool and is developing permanent supportive housing as part of a comprehensive, collaborative community development strategy along the San Pablo Avenue corridor.

Position Summary:

The Custodian & Maintenance
- Closer plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across all St. Mary’s Center facilities. This full‑time position keeps buildings clean, safe, and orderly by performing routine cleaning, waste removal, and minor maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and removing cobwebs.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, kitchens, and other high‑traffic shared spaces.
  • Empty and sanitize trash, compost, and recycling bins throughout the facilities.
  • Wipe down and maintain surfaces including baseboards, bannisters, windows, and doors.
  • Support deep‑cleaning schedules, including periodic intensive cleaning of client rooms and communal areas.
  • Performs light groundskeeping to m aintain the cleanliness and appearance of building and property exteriors and entryways.
  • Monitor and replenish cleaning and janitorial supplies; notify supervisor of low inventory.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist with room turnover in the Transitional Housing program, ensuring rooms are clean and ready for new residents.
  • Collaborate with program and facilities staff to respond to urgent cleaning needs.
  • Perform additional custodial or light maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Close main facility Monday-Friday, ensuring all doors and windows are secure d, alarms are set, and property gates are locked.
Qualifications:
  • Prior custodial, maintenance, or janitorial experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with cleaning products, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment.
  • Valid CA driver's license
Working Conditions:
  • This position involves standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), bending, and other physical tasks.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, outdoor conditions, and client‑facing environments.

  • Frequent bending and stooping to clean lower surfaces (e.g., floors, baseboards).
  • Kneeling to clean under furniture, toilets, or other low spaces.
  • A bility to reach and clean high surfaces, such as windowsills or shelves, with step stools or ladders.
  • Ability to push and pull equipment and supply carts, trash bins, etc.
  • Repetitive sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and dusting motions.
  • Extended use of hand tools such as mops, brooms, and scrub brushes.
