Coverage Custodian 1 - District Wide- 6:00am - 2:30pm (Mon-Fri)
Job Type: Full-Time
Location: District Wide - Omaha, Nebraska
Schedule: 6:00am – 2:30pm, Monday – Friday

General
Summary:
This position maintains the highest custodial standards at any of the district’s 35 school buildings. The custodian works as needed to cover absences, performing routine cleaning, security, and basic mechanical maintenance. Responsibilities include cleaning classrooms, cafeterias, libraries, gymnasiums, restrooms, offices, athletic areas, hallways, common areas, and outdoor spaces, along with lamp replacement, basic equipment operation, trash removal, and snow and yard maintenance.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required to interact with students, staff, and the public.
Essential Functions:
- Picks up and empties trash.
- Ensures the front fifty feet of all indoor and outdoor areas are presentable to the public, students, and staff.
- Performs snow removal and keeps outside grounds clean.
- Provides services for the lunch program.
- Changes plastic bags, cleans restrooms, classrooms, chalkboards and whiteboards, erasers, pencil sharpeners, walls, ceilings, light fixtures, glass, blinds, and draperies.
- Completes monthly preventive maintenance, safety inspections, supply orders, and reports accurately and on time.
- Keeps restrooms supplied with paper products, soap, and other items.
- Removes and replaces defective lights.
- Cleans mechanical grills.
- Dusts horizontal and vertical surfaces.
- Keeps ceiling tiles in place.
- Provides services for special activities.
- Identifies and reports items requiring repair actions.
- Works closely with office staff and fellow workers to provide feedback on building maintenance actions.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to relocate within the district to cover short‑term absences.
- Knowledge of basic cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Computer proficiency and effective communication skills.
- Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength.
- Ability to operate mechanical cleaning equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain acceptable working relations with supervisors, staff, students, the general public, and fellow workers.
- Willingness to work overtime as required.
- Maintains a neat and clean appearance.
- Able to complete required training.
- Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.
- Preferred:
Performs duties with minimum supervision and demonstrates knowledge of proper product and equipment usage.
