General
Summary:
This position requires routine manual labor associated with daily cleaning, security, and safe operation of District facilities. Employees in this job classification are under the supervision of the Custodial Director and perform various duties requiring moderate physical strength. Typical routine duties include moderate to heavy‑duty cleaning and restorations, minor assembly and repair, and providing custodial assistance to employees on leave or light duty.
Additionally, this position requires lamp replacement, operation of custodial mechanical equipment, policing trash from grounds and playground areas, watering turf, sweeping sidewalks, and performing tasks associated with housekeeping and snow removal programs. Professional interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain positive relations with coworkers, staff, students, and the general public are also required. Hours and work locations will vary depending on assignments and district needs.
Functions
- Performs furniture relocation to prepare areas for remodeling, restoration, or heavy cleaning
- Performs restorations in interior building areas including classrooms, restrooms, gymnasiums, and common spaces on a variety of surfaces (wood, tile, terrazzo)
- Provides services for special activities including setting up seating and court configurations, and removing/storing props and furniture when activities conclude
- Performs furniture assembly and minor furniture repairs, and identifies and reports items requiring more complicated repairs
- Assists with training, record‑keeping, and administrative tasks
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Operates floor care program including dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing, spot cleaning, stain removal, gum removal, and carpet extraction
- Picks up litter and empties trash; provides services for the lunch program; changes plastic waste bags; cleans and dusts restrooms, classrooms, chalkboards, erasers, pencil sharpeners, walls, ceiling, light fixtures, glass, blinds, draperies; cleans and polishes furniture; dusts horizontal and vertical surfaces; cleans mechanical grills; and keeps restrooms supplied with paper products, soap, and other items
- Removes and replaces defective lights and replaces and adjusts ceiling tiles
- Picks up trash from grounds and playground areas, waters turf, sweeps sidewalks, and performs snow removal operations
- Fills in for absent and vacant custodial positions as needed
- Education:
high school diploma or equivalent - Experience:
one year as a Millard Custodian I (desired) - Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as floor scrubbers, snow blowers, and other commercial‑grade equipment
- Knowledge of cleaning processes and proper use of materials, chemicals, and equipment
- Moderate physical strength for manual tasks
- Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain amicable working relations with supervisors, staff, students, the general public, and fellow workers
- Ability to work overtime as required
- Ability to work varied schedules, including swing shifts at locations throughout the district
- Ability to work inside and outside buildings in changing conditions
- Ability to complete required training
- Ability to work from ladder and scaffolding
- Able to perform assigned duties with minimum supervision
