Head Custodian Job Description

Job Title: Head Custodian

Department: Custodial/Maintenance

Education Level and Certification: High school degree or GED. Custodial and maintenance experience preferred. Must maintain an unrestricted motor vehicle operator’s license and a satisfactory driving record that meets Board policy requirements.

Reports To: Custodian Supervisor

Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
  • Follow procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Notify supervisors concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Steam‑clean or shampoo carpets.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding for events such as banquets, meetings, assemblies, athletic events, and plays.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies manually or using hand trucks.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas using snowplows, snow blowers, and shovels, and spread snow‑melting chemicals.
  • Clean equipment such as glassware and metal instruments using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment.
  • Spray insecticides and fumigants to prevent insect and rodent infestation.
  • Make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Drive vehicles to perform or travel to cleaning work, including vans, industrial trucks, or industrial vacuum cleaners.
  • Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds.
  • Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water with commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Serve as a role model to all students.
  • Serve as a positive member of the community in a way that does not negatively affect the District’s reputation or image.
  • Refrain from engaging in conduct that interferes with the operations of the District, including the education of students.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other staff and administration.
  • Adhere to all District policies, rules, regulations, and supervisory directives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information concerning staff, students, and parents in accordance with law and District rules.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics of the District and the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE Rule 27).

FLSA Exempt Status: Non‑exempt.

Essential Functions: The essential functions of the Custodian position include: (1) regular, dependable in‑person attendance; (2) the ability to perform tasks requiring effective teaching and communication skills; and (3) the ability to perform physical requirements such as lifting, walking, standing, and handling equipment.

At‑Will Position. This position is at‑will and may be terminated by the Superintendent or designee at any time.

Position Type: Full‑Time.
