As long as they are enrolled at UW-Madison, student workers are eligible to continue working. Work schedules change each semester to accommodate new academic obligations.

Schedule:

6 to 12 hours per week is average for this position. One overnight shift per week is required for your first semester at College Library. More hours can be negotiated, and there are many opportunities to take additional shifts from week to week. Note that we are hiring primarily for the times listed. Offering additional times is welcome, however, applicants will not be considered if they can not work some of the times listed.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Qualifications:

Experience working with a team to solve problems, or

Experience with customer service, or
Experience tutoring or teaching, or a desire to build experience in this area
Library experience is not necessary

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to follow written instructions with autonomy.
Ability to communicate effectively, or the desire to build this skill.
Ability to thrive in a team environment.
Desire to engage service to diverse populations, and engage social justice issues in small but impactful, everyday, ways.
Commitment to a regular schedule, attendance, and communicating about any changes.
Ability to work from 11:30pm to 8am once a week.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Circulation Student Assistants are the face of College Library. They are responsible for many of its daily functions and basic services. Student Assistants spend 75% of their time engaged directly in public service activities and another 25% performing tasks around the library. Providing great service to students, faculty, and staff is a key part of this job and Student Assistants are expected to be approachable, knowledgeable, and collaborative at all times.

Student Assistants are also responsible for keeping College Library's collections organized, facilities clean, and supplies stocked. This requires attention to detail, the ability to accomplish tasks in a self-directed manner, and a willingness to ask questions when instructions are unclear. In addition to working at College Library, Student Assistants might also work at other libraries on campus and will work one overnight shift per week (11:30pm-8am).

Perks include access to the library's Staff Lounge (which can be used by Student Assistants for studying during busy times of the semester like finals), the ability to study or do homework on the job during quiet periods, and opportunities to learn library research tools and methodologies to employ in your own area of study.
