Position: Nonprofit CFO (Assistant Vice President).

A top client is currently searching for an experienced remote-based Nonprofit CFO (Assistant VP) in Chicago, IL. As the Nonprofit CFO, you will provide oversight of direct reports and CFO services to non-profit organizations by executing contractual obligations, including managing the full-cycle accounting functions of multiple clients, such as financial statement preparation, cash management, grant management, budgeting, and audit preparation support.

The AVP also serves as a brand ambassador and thought‑leader of the company, and helps initiate, maintain, and develop relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned nonprofit clients, offering strategic financial advice and guidance to support their organizational objectives.
  • Conduct thorough financial assessments for each client, analyzing budgets, cash flow, and financial statements to identify areas for improvement and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop comprehensive budgets and financial forecasts, ensuring alignment with their long‑term goals and objectives.
  • Oversee and support the preparation and delivery of accurate and timely financial reports to clients.
  • Deliver financial presentations to key client stakeholders.
  • Provide insights and recommendations based upon key financial metrics and industry trends.
  • Ensure client compliance with all relevant financial and funding regulations and reporting requirements by proactively identifying and addressing any potential compliance issues.
  • Assess and mitigate financial risks for clients by implementing effective strategies to safeguard their financial assets and investments.
  • Evaluate and streamline financial processes and procedures for clients.
  • Review and recommend cost‑saving measures and revenue generation strategies, including funding opportunities such as federal, state, and local government grants.
  • Serve as subject‑matter expert and advisor on all client‑related accounting and financial matters, including the Code of Federal Regulations, indirect cost rates, allocation methodologies, and accounting standard updates.
  • Apply deep GAAP knowledge to ensure compliant financial reporting and sound accounting practices across engagements.
  • Address client concerns and ensure timely resolution.
  • Oversee team deliverables and execution of contractual deliverables.
  • Manage multiple direct reports and provide mentoring, training, and professional development.
  • Review team performance and provide constructive feedback and sign‑off on individual development plans.
  • Provide thought leadership through presentations on technical and management issues to organizations and prospective clients.
  • Support review and management of contract scope, pricing, and staffing to ensure financial profitability of assigned engagement(s).
  • Engage and participate in the client’s community and mission through various means, such as volunteer opportunities.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, excellent interpersonal skills, advanced knowledge of industry‑specific accounting software, and advanced Excel skills
  • 10+ years of industry‑specific experience, 10+ years of senior accounting experience (DOF/Controller/CFO/CAO), business acumen, and ability to communicate with key stakeholders and C‑level executives
  • Experience working in or with health and human service‑related organizations
  • Federal grant administration/management experience preferred, State of Illinois grant administration / GATA experience desired
  • Must be willing to travel (as applicable)
Preferred
  • Master’s Degree
  • CPA
  • Experience in people management, and experience in creating/implementing processes and efficiencies
Desirable
  • Work experience in consulting and/or business process outsourcing (BPO)
