Public Equity, a Community Violence Intervention (CVI) nonprofit organization – Chicago, IL – is seeking a professional, organized, and detail-oriented Human Resources (HR) Assistant to support the daily HR and administrative operations of a fast‑paced organization serving communities throughout Chicago.

This position plays a key role in supporting employee relations, onboarding, compliance, personnel documentation, payroll coordination, recruitment activities, and overall staff support within a trauma‑informed and mission‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with employee onboarding, orientation, and new hire documentation
  • Maintain organized and confidential personnel files and HR records
  • Support recruitment efforts, including job postings, interview scheduling, and applicant communication
  • Assist with employee timekeeping, payroll coordination, and HRIS systems such as ADP
  • Track staff trainings, certifications, licenses, and compliance requirements
  • Prepare HR documents including offer letters, disciplinary notices, policy acknowledgments, and employment verifications
  • Support employee relations by responding to staff inquiries and directing concerns appropriately
  • Assist with maintaining organizational policies, procedures, and compliance with labor laws and grant requirements
  • Coordinate staff meetings, trainings, wellness initiatives, and organizational events as needed
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality regarding employee and organizational information
  • Provide administrative support to leadership and HR management as assigned
Qualifications
  • Previous HR, administrative, nonprofit, or office support experience preferred
  • Knowledge of employment practices, confidentiality standards, and HR processes
  • Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Teams, and HR systems preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in fast‑paced, community‑based environments
  • Experience working within nonprofit, behavioral health, social services, or violence prevention settings preferred
