Marine Cargo Underwriter

Avalon Risk Management ("Avalon") is a specialty insurance broker with offices throughout the U.S. and Canada. We focus on the unique and exciting world of risk management and insurance products for the international trade and logistics industry. Avalon is a privately held company owned by our founding management team and we have celebrated over 25 years of success. We are looking for a full-time Underwriter.

This position is based out of our international headquarters located at 200 N. Martingale Rd., Schaumburg, IL 60173.

We are looking for underwriters or international trade professionals with at least 2 years’ professional experience in demonstrating analytical skills in either underwriting (preferably in either marine or inland marine cargo),
or via experience in international logistics. To succeed, one must be detail-oriented and be able to prioritize, meet deadlines, and multi-task while being flexible for day-to-day handling of special quotes and projects as they arise while using internal policy management software as applicable for each specific program. Intermediate Microsoft Office skills are required, especially with Word and Excel. Excellent time management skills are a must, and you must be able to work well with a team and on your own to fully understand why activities are required.

This position entails:

• Review renewal and new submissions received to make sure they fit program parameters.
• Underwrite submissions within established procedures and provide pricing and quotes to clients.
• Approve and bind coverage within underwriting authority.
• Ensure policies are issued timely and accurately.
• Review, approve and process endorsements for coverage as needed.
• Maintain electronic customer folders with policies, endorsements, and correspondence.
• Complete state and federal filings as needed.
• Review and process policy renewals under program guidelines.
• Prepare monthly reporting for insurance markets.
• Manage Renewal Process to ensure timely completion.
• Assist with maintenance of client files.
• Provide assistance within department for other programs.
• Assist manager/supervisor with audit needs and special projects.

Our Marine Cargo Underwriters continually demonstrate excellent customer skills, strong relationship building, and familiarity with various insurance company programs. Since they are responsible for handling profitable programs, they are curious and proactive.

The base compensation range is $80,000 - $90,000 per year, dependent on experience.
