Position OverviewThe Ngambay Phone Interpreter is responsible for providing real‑time interpreting services between Ngambay and English speakers on demand. The role requires rapid, accurate, and culturally sensitive interpretation across a range of industries including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911.
Essential Job Functions- Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and maintain a friendly, professional demeanor.
- Convey concepts and meanings accurately according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain professional conduct throughout all sessions, remain calm if a primary speaker is incoherent or upset, especially during emergency calls.
- Ensure punctuality and availability during work hours.
- Follow client instructions and protocol, protecting client confidentiality and allowing interaction only with client permission.
- Understand industry‑specific terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law contexts.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and accommodate diverse environments.
- Manage emotionally charged or stressful calls, including high call volumes, while meeting required service standards.
- Fluency in Ngambay and English, with deep cultural competency and ability to navigate regional accents.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to ensure high accuracy.
- Ability to stay detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive conversations (e.g., end‑of‑life, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, sexual orientation, gender expression).
- Background in teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation is preferred.
- Minimum age 18 years; legally authorized to work in the United States with no visa sponsorship required.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent. Ability to read and write both languages is highly preferred.
- Candidates currently employed by a client of Language Line or an affiliated business are ineligible.
- Subject to post‑offer background check and/or drug screening.
- Dedicated personal device (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone) running Windows, macOS, Chrome
OS, iPadOS, Android, or iOS. - High‑speed Internet connection: ≥5
Mbps download, ≥3
Mbps upload, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms. - Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Operate keyboard and mouse, remain stationary in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
- Perform required software functions with adequate manual dexterity, including typing or writing.
- Lift up to 26lbs; tolerate moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
